Kanazawa Castle Park is located in the center of Kanazawa City.
Kanazawa Castle built by the Maeda clan, and was the seat of their rule over the Hokuriku region (present-day Ishikawa and Toyama prefectures) during the Edo period, was built here. The castle was constructed as the political, economic, and cultural center of the region.
With the end of the Edo period, and beginning of the Meiji period, the Castle became a military base. After the second World War, it was used as the campus of Kanazawa University.
In 1996, after Kanazawa University moved the location of its campus, the prefectural government began work to turn it into a public park.
In 2001 Kanazawa Castle Park opened.
Within the park, visitors can experience the history of the former Kanazawa Castle through three Important Cultural Property structures, including Ishikawa-mon Gate, which preserves the appearance of an Edo period castle, as well as stone walls built using a variety of techniques.
Restored gates, turrets, gardens, and moats are located throughout the grounds.
As a precious green space preserved within the city, it offers beautiful seasonal views, such as cherry blossoms in spring and autumn foliage.
It is also a spot for strolling and jogging, and is used for sporting events.
In the over 20 years since opening in 2001, the park has continued to undergo improvements. Together with the neighboring Kenrokuen Garden, it is beloved as Ishikawa’s trademark hub for tourism and interaction.
